How to Ask for Help in the Workplace
It’s a sign of strength to ask for help, especially during difficult times. It’s much harder to go it alone and try to figure everything out yourself. 2020 has put us all in a position where it’s okay to ask for help on navigating this new remote work culture.
The good news is that there are resources at your disposal if you know where to look. Here are some common resources that can help:
Employee Assistance Program
If you’re in a position where you feel like you need to speak with someone confidentially about a work situation, check if your company provides access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAP is a service provided by employers to help employees maintain their well-being. Counseling is provided to help employees dealing with personal and work-related problems.
If you’re managing a team, it’s important to let them know this resource is available to them.
Resume Building Tools
Maybe you’re in a situation where your spouse or significant other has lost their job. This can have a direct impact on their mental health and self-esteem. But there are tools and resources available to help. They can learn how to update their resume to land that next job.
If you’re managing a team, it’s important to keep spirits high and stress levels low. However, it’s hard to do that when you’re managing a remote team. While working from home may seem ideal, many employees weren’t prepared for the transition. People are dealing with distractions, a lack of boundaries, remote learning if they have children, and the list goes on. Stress levels are higher, and because of that, productivity may be lower. But there are resources available to address stress management, help with team building, and internal communication.
It’s essential that everyone - both leaders and employees - focuses on taking care of themselves and asking for help when they need it. At a time when everyone is stressed, we need to learn how to do more with less and utilize the resources at our disposal.
